2 Bros. Pizza

Two Bros. Pizza is a chain category three pizza joint (dollar slices) that has locations all over Manhattan. I recently stopped into the one on 9th Avenue & 40th Street and I was pretty amazed at how good it was for a buck. It was a little thicker in the crust department than I usually like, and not as crisp, but this was a fresh-out-of-the-oven slice, so that might be why. It was the right amount of doughy, it had a good sauce-to-cheese ratio, and it packed good flavor. Definitely stop in.

Joey Pepperoni

This is a no-nonsense category 3 dollar slice joint down on 1st Avenue just below the 14th street L station. Doughy yet crispy crust, quality melty yet crisp cheese, and a good sweet sauce. Fucking hits the spot. I easily put this slice down after a full meal (dessert included) at a nearby French bistro. Great little slice.

Percy’s

I strolled by this little category 3 dollar pizza joint while I was on my way to grab a burger with a friend. It turns out this was one of the best dollar slices I’ve tried to date. The crust was nice and crispy, and the cheese was of good quality. I only wish there was a bit more sauce on this baby. But I have to say: this place is a much better buy than some of the standard category 2 joints charging upwards of $2.50 for a slice.

They do offer some topping slices for a dollar more.

Here’s another category 3 joint for yo’ ass. Not a bad slice, but also not the top of the heap for this style. Cheese, sauce and crust all above average but a solid slice at a category 2 joint is still worth the upcharge.

Pizza $1.00

I walked by this little joint on Hester while I was on a stroll through Chinatown. I hit it up. Apparently it is also known as “Hakki Akdeniz” or “KF Hester Pizza” according to some Google searching. Not bad, but there are better spots up by me for the cheap pizza hunger fix. I’d say that the sauce, cheese and crust were all middle of the road in terms of the dollar joint / category 3 standard (they do serve other pies as well).

The Best Pizza

This little category 2 and 3 joint is on 9th Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets in Hell’s Kitchen. They serve dollar regular slices, but they also offer toppings as well for an up-charge. The dollar slice was a little doughy for my liking, but the sauce and cheese were flavorful. If you like a more filling slice due to the dough being thicker, then this is a great buy for you.

Sacco Pizza

Sacco is a little category 2 joint on 9th Avenue in the 50s that I pass by all the time. Today my wife and I wandered in for a slice.

It was pretty good; nice and thin crust, good flavor on the sauce and cheese, and not a lot of oil drip-off.

The problem is, at $2.50 a slice, I found that the nearby dollar slice joint “NY Fresh Pizza” was somewhat on-par, and for the $2.50 price point in this neighborhood, I’d probably go back to Luigi’s or Bella Vita before coming here again. Not a bad slice at all though.

NY Fresh Pizza

I walked by this little hole in the wall and figured I’d stick my dick in for a slice. This is on 9th Ave near 52nd Street.

It was actually pretty good as far as category 3 dollar slice joints go. I was so hungry that I forgot to take a pic of the pizza until I was nearly finished.

Not bad for a buck. Better than most dollar slice joints I’ve been to so far.

Joe’s Pizza

I love the pizza here. It’s flat, crispy, has fresh mozzarella, and nice sauce. This famous pizza joint was even featured in the movie Spider-Man. Go here if you are ever in the Bleecker and 7th Avenue area. You won’t be disappointed. Throw some fresh basil on this and it is a perfect pie.

Luigi’s Gourmet

My wife and I ordered a pie from here for delivery once and we were happy with it. Not overjoyed, but happy. It was a good, fair price ($12), and the shit was crispy instead of runny and floppy, DESPITE being stuck in a pizza box and stuffed in a padded bag where the shit can get steamier than a night in the jungle with the Penthouse Pets. So I made it a point to come back and try a proper slice from under the glass, reheated.

Here’s the verdict: I liked it very much. The sauce was robust, a little spicy kick to it. The crust was crispy and durable, yet soft to bite down. The cheese was properly layered and just the right amount. I also tried a fresh mozz slice (I am a sucker for these). This one had basil and fresh sliced tomatoes on it as well. However, I thought that this lacked flavor when eaten side-by-side with the regular slice. I found myself wanting to add salt or something. Oh well. At least we know the regular slice is legit.

Oh and check out these garlic knots. They look delicious. Next time I will try:
